Pollen grain of the passion flower

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain of the passion flower, Passiflora caerulea. The spherical grain has a diameter of 50 micrometres & looks rather like a tennis ball. Its outer wall is highly sculptured, & is divided by three wide germinal furrows. When the pollen grain, containing the male gametes, lands on the stigma of the flower, it germinates. A pollen tube grows out of one of the germinal furrows. Passion flowers provide copious nectar, & are insect- pollinated. Magnification: x45 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate beauty of a pollen grain from the passion flower, Passiflora caerulea. Underneath its false-color scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are transported into a microscopic world where nature's artistry unfolds. The spherical grain, resembling a tennis ball, measures 50 micrometers in diameter and is adorned with an exquisitely sculptured outer wall. Divided by three wide germinal furrows, this pollen grain carries within it the male gametes necessary for reproduction. When it lands on the stigma of another passion flower, it germinates and gives rise to new life. A remarkable sight to behold is the emergence of a delicate pollen tube growing out of one of these furrows. Passion flowers have evolved to attract insects as their pollinators through copious nectar production. This mutualistic relationship ensures that these vibrant blooms continue to thrive and reproduce successfully. The magnification level used for this image was x45 at 35mm size, allowing us to appreciate every minute detail of this tiny wonder. Science Photo Library has once again captured nature's marvels in all their glory with this photograph print – a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation in botany and plant reproductive studies.
