Polarised LM of a molar tooth showing decay

Tooth decay. Polarised light micrograph (PLM) of a longitudinal section through a molar tooth with dental caries, or tooth decay. The tooth consists of enamel (orange) covering the dentine (blue) and the pulp (at bottom centre) with its nerve fibres and blood vessels. Tooth decay (red & black, at centre) is caused by the build-up of plaque, which consists largely of food remains and bacteria. The bacteria feed on the food particles, producing acids as they break them down. If untreated the acid will destroy the enamel and dentine, exposing the pulp and causing intense pain. Eventually the tooth will die. Magnification: x15 at 4.5x6.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a molar tooth affected by decay. Through the use of polarised light micrography, we are able to witness the destructive effects of dental caries on this vital part of our oral health. The image reveals different layers of the tooth structure, with enamel appearing in vibrant orange and dentine in striking blue. At the bottom center lies the pulp, housing nerve fibers and blood vessels crucial for its survival. However, at the heart of this composition is a stark contrast - tooth decay depicted in ominous shades of red and black. Tooth decay occurs when plaque accumulates due to remnants of food particles mixed with bacteria. As these bacteria break down food, they release acids that gradually erode both enamel and dentine. If left untreated, this process exposes the sensitive pulp, leading to excruciating pain for individuals affected. Ultimately, without intervention, this once healthy tooth will succumb to death. This thought-provoking artwork serves as a reminder about maintaining proper oral hygiene practices and seeking timely dental care to prevent such conditions from progressing further. With magnification at x15 within a compact 4.5x6.5cm size frame, Science Photo Library has skillfully captured an extraordinary visual representation that merges artistry with scientific knowledge – shedding light on an important aspect of human health: dental caries or tooth decay.
