Planet GJ1214b, artwork C013 / 7775

Planet GJ1214b. Computer artwork of the extrasolar planet GJ1214b transiting in front of its star, GJ 1214. This star lies around 40 light-years from the Sun, in the constellation Ophiuchus. The planet was discovered in December 2009 and is classified as a super-Earth as it is larger than Earth but has a mass and radius significantly less than those of the gas giants in the Solar System. It is the first of a new class of planets with small size and relatively low density. GJ 1214 b is also significant because its parent star is relatively near the Sun and because it transits (crosses in front of) that parent star, which allows the planets atmosphere to be studied using spectroscopic technologies

Alien Planet Extrasolar Low Density Ophiuchus Passing Planetary Science Space Observation Star Stars Transit Transiting Small Size Stary

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Planet GJ1214b, a remarkable extrasolar planet located approximately 40 light-years away from our Sun in the constellation Ophiuchus. Created through intricate computer artwork, it depicts the awe-inspiring moment when GJ1214b gracefully transits in front of its parent star, GJ 1214. Discovered in December 2009, this celestial body belongs to a unique class known as super-Earths due to its larger size compared to our home planet. However, despite its greater dimensions, GJ1214b possesses a mass and radius that are significantly smaller than those of gas giants within our Solar System. This extraordinary characteristic makes it an intriguing subject for scientific exploration. What sets GJ 1214 b apart is not only its relatively low density but also its proximity to Earth's solar system. Its close distance allows astronomers and researchers to study its atmosphere using advanced spectroscopic technologies during these rare transit events. As we gaze upon this stunning artwork captured by NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, we are reminded of the vastness and diversity present beyond our own cosmic neighborhood. It serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about the universe and our relentless pursuit of knowledge regarding distant worlds like Planet GJ1214b.
