Pisces constellation. 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh (1829) by Kornelius Reissig, an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The title translates as: Presentation of constellations in 30 tables. This was the earliest Russian star atlas, and was based on earlier work by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776). The constellations are labelled in Cyrillic, represented by mythological figures and animals. This is Plate 23, showing the constellation of Pisces (the Fishes)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Pisces constellation, as depicted in a 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas "Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh" by Kornelius Reissig. As an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg, Reissig meticulously crafted this early Russian star atlas based on earlier works by Bode and Flamsteed. The image features Plate 23, which beautifully illustrates Pisces (the Fishes) against a striking black background. The constellation is represented through mythological figures and animals, with Cyrillic labels adding to its historical significance. This intricate artwork combines elements of astronomical accuracy and artistic representation. The gold leaf accents add a touch of elegance to this celestial map while punched holes indicate coordinates for precise navigation across the night sky. Its publication in 1829 makes it a remarkable piece of history that offers insight into how our ancestors perceived and understood the cosmos. Preserved within the Library of Congress/Science Photo Library archives, this print not only captures the beauty and complexity of celestial cartography but also serves as a testament to human curiosity about our place in the universe. It invites us to appreciate both scientific knowledge and artistic expression intertwined within one mesmerizing visual creation.
