Crystal-based neutrino detector

Experimental neutrino detector. Technician holds a sapphire used in an experimental neutrino detector built by Joseph Weber in the 1980s. Weber believed that pure samples of very stiff crystals, such as sapphire, could be used to detect neutrinos. Since neutrinos have extremely high frequencies, and are able to travel through the Earth, he proposed a new form of long distance telecommunication. Neutrinos are fundamental particles that exist throughout the universe. They lack electric charge and have almost no mass. At present they can only be detected using huge detectors such as those at CERN or SLAC. Photographed at the Pirelli Research Centre, Milan, Italy

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, a technician delicately holds a sapphire, which was once part of an experimental neutrino detector built by the brilliant physicist Joseph Weber in the 1980s. Weber's groundbreaking idea revolved around using pure samples of rigid crystals like sapphire to detect these elusive particles known as neutrinos. Neutrinos are extraordinary fundamental particles that permeate every corner of our universe, devoid of electric charge and nearly massless. Neutrinos possess astonishingly high frequencies and have the remarkable ability to traverse through solid matter such as our planet Earth. Fascinated by their unique properties, Weber proposed harnessing their potential for long-distance telecommunication. Imagine the possibilities if we could utilize these mysterious messengers from space! This photograph was taken at the renowned Pirelli Research Centre in Milan, Italy - a hub for scientific exploration and innovation. The male technician named Luca stands amidst cutting-edge equipment, symbolizing humanity's tireless pursuit of knowledge about the fundamental building blocks of our universe. It is worth noting that detecting neutrinos remains an immense challenge; currently, only colossal detectors like those found at CERN or SLAC can accomplish this feat. Nonetheless, this image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and curiosity in unraveling nature's deepest secrets within the realm of particle physics.
