Photograph of Charles Darwin in 1881, aged 72

Charles Darwin. Photograph of English naturalist Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) in 1881, aged 72. As a young man Darwin briefly studied medicine then trained in the clergy, but his interest was in natural history. In 1831 he set sail as naturalist on HMS Beagle, which was to provide the fieldwork for his famous book: Origin of Species (1859). His theory of natural selection suggested that natural variation in a species creates a wide range of individual traits, some more useful than others. Competition to survive provides a driving force for evolution in the form of natural selection. His theory fuelled bitter controversy. Darwin is buried in Westminster Abbey. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures Charles Darwin, the renowned English naturalist, in 1881 at the age of 72. Throughout his life, Darwin's unwavering passion for natural history propelled him to become one of the most influential figures in scientific history. Though he initially dabbled in medicine and theology during his youth, it was his deep fascination with the wonders of nature that truly captivated him. In 1831, Darwin embarked on a monumental journey aboard HMS Beagle as its resident naturalist. This expedition would serve as a catalyst for his groundbreaking book: Origin of Species (1859). Within this seminal work, he introduced the theory of natural selection - an idea that suggested species evolve through gradual changes over time due to advantageous traits being passed down from generation to generation. Darwin's revolutionary theory sparked intense controversy and debate within scientific circles and beyond. Nevertheless, his immense contributions to evolutionary biology have left an indelible mark on our understanding of life itself.
