Petrified forest, Argentina C014 / 1037

Petrified forest. Fossilised remains of tree trunks dating from the Palaeocene epoch (around 65.5 to 56 million years ago). Petrification is a term used to describe the fossilisation of wood. It occurs when pieces of wood fall into sediments and are rapidly covered, preventing normal decay. Over long periods of time the wood decays. As it decays, the wood is replaced by minerals which are deposited from solution in ground water. This forms an exact replica of the original, preserving the texture of the bark and even the growth rings. Photographed at the Jose Ormachea Petrified Forest, Sarmiento, Patagonia, Argentina

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Petrified Forest in Argentina, specifically at the Jose Ormachea Petrified Forest in Sarmiento, Patagonia. The image captures the fossilized remains of tree trunks dating back to the Palaeocene epoch, approximately 65.5 to 56 million years ago. Petrification is a remarkable process that occurs when pieces of wood fall into sediments and are rapidly covered, preventing normal decay. Over an extensive period of time, as the wood decays, it is replaced by minerals deposited from solution in groundwater. This results in an exact replica of the original tree trunk, preserving even its texture and growth rings. The photograph beautifully portrays this prehistoric wonderland with its lush greenery and towering petrified trees standing tall against a picturesque valley backdrop. It serves as a testament to both nature's resilience and geological history. The Petrified Forest not only offers a glimpse into our planet's ancient past but also provides valuable insights for paleontologists studying plant life during that era. Its significance extends beyond its biological value; it represents a living museum where visitors can witness millions of years frozen in time. With every detail meticulously captured by photographer Javier Trueba from Science Photo Library, this print invites viewers on an awe-inspiring journey through time and space—a visual reminder of Earth's fascinating history etched within these petrified treasures found deep within Patagonia's enchanting landscapes.
