Petrified forest, Argentina C014 / 1017
Petrified forest. Fossilised remains of tree trunks. Petrification is a term used to describe the fossilisation of wood. It occurs when pieces of wood fall into sediments and are rapidly covered, preventing normal decay. Over long periods of time the wood decays. As it decays, the wood is replaced by minerals which are deposited from solution in ground water. This forms an exact replica of the original, preserving the texture of the bark and even the growth rings. Photographed in Jaramillo, Santa Cruz, Patagonia, Argentina

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Petrified Forest in Argentina. The image captures a moment frozen in time, revealing fossilized remains of tree trunks that have undergone the fascinating process of petrification. As wood falls into sediments and is rapidly covered, it is shielded from decay, allowing for an extraordinary transformation to take place over countless years. The intricate details preserved within these petrified trees are truly remarkable. Each texture of bark and growth ring has been replicated with astonishing precision as minerals gradually replace the decaying wood through groundwater solutions. This natural phenomenon serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of nature throughout history. Located in Jaramillo, Santa Cruz, Patagonia, this ancient forest holds immense historical significance. It provides invaluable insights into our planet's past and offers a glimpse into prehistoric times when lush jungles thrived in what is now South America. This photograph by Javier Trueba invites us to marvel at the wonders of botany, paleontology, and biology intertwined within this unique ecosystem. It transports us back millions of years ago when these towering trees dominated their surroundings. With its rich blend of scientific importance and breathtaking visual appeal, this print stands as a tribute to both nature's ingenuity and humanity's insatiable curiosity about our world's incredible past.
