Petrified forest, Argentina C014 / 1015

Petrified forest. Fossilised remains of tree trunks. Petrification is a term used to describe the fossilisation of wood. It occurs when pieces of wood fall into sediments and are rapidly covered, preventing normal decay. Over long periods of time the wood decays. As it decays, the wood is replaced by minerals which are deposited from solution in ground water. This forms an exact replica of the original, preserving the texture of the bark and even the growth rings. Photographed in Jaramillo, Santa Cruz, Patagonia, Argentina

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Petrified Forest in Jaramillo, Santa Cruz, Patagonia, Argentina. The image captures the fossilized remains of tree trunks that have undergone a remarkable process known as petrification. As pieces of wood fall into sediments and are rapidly covered, normal decay is prevented, leading to the preservation of these ancient trees over long periods of time. The texture of the bark and even the growth rings are perfectly conserved through a fascinating transformation. As the wood decays gradually, minerals from ground water replace it, forming an exact replica of the original tree trunk. This natural phenomenon offers us a glimpse into prehistoric times and allows us to appreciate nature's ability to create stunning works of art. In this photograph taken by Javier Trueba for Science Photo Library, we see a male tourist standing amidst this historical wonderland. His presence adds scale and emphasizes just how immense these petrified trees truly are. The lush greenery surrounding him creates a stark contrast against the pale hues of these fossilized giants. Visiting this unique destination not only satisfies one's curiosity about botany and biology but also provides an opportunity to delve into South America's rich paleontological history. With its breathtaking beauty and scientific significance, this Petrified Forest stands as a testament to Earth's incredible transformations throughout time.
