Paranthropus robustus jaw bone C013 / 6558

Paranthropus robustus mandible (lower jaw). Also known as Australopithecus robustus, this extinct hominid lived in Africa during the late Pliocene between 2.6 and 1 million years ago. It forms part of the human evolutionary tree and was short and stocky with substantial ridges on the skull suggesting it had powerful jaw muscles and a vegetarian diet. It lived in open woodland, and was more robust than other hominid species of the time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Paranthropus robustus jaw bone, also known as Australopithecus robustus. This extinct hominid inhabited Africa during the late Pliocene era, approximately 2.6 to 1 million years ago. The lower jaw on display here provides a fascinating glimpse into our human evolutionary tree. With its black background, this image beautifully highlights the intricate details of the teeth and mandible. As we examine this specimen, it becomes evident that Paranthropus robustus was a short and stocky creature with prominent ridges on its skull. These features suggest that it possessed powerful jaw muscles, indicating a vegetarian diet. Living in open woodlands of ancient Africa, Paranthropus robustus stood out among other hominid species of its time due to its robust nature. Its unique characteristics make it an important piece in understanding our prehistoric past. Displayed by the Natural History Museum in London and captured by Science Photo Library, this photograph represents an invaluable contribution to anthropology and paleontology studies alike. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in unraveling the mysteries surrounding our own origins and offers us a glimpse into the diverse range of life forms that once roamed our planet millions of years ago.
