Paper mill machinery

Paper mill machinery. This part of the papermaking process involves depositing cellulose fibres in water to form a sheet of paper. The cellulose fibres are obtained from pulped wood from trees. The sheet of paper is then dried by squeezing and draining the water. This is the Kotlas Pulp and Paper Mill in the Arkhangelsk Region of northern Russia. It is part of the Ilim Pulp company, which owns several other mills, as well as logging companies, making it the largest pulp and forestry company in Russia, and one of the largest in the world. As of 2003, it was producing 2.8 million tons of paper. Photographed on 10 April 2006

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate machinery involved in the papermaking process at the Kotlas Pulp and Paper Mill, located in the Arkhangelsk Region of northern Russia. The image captures a pivotal stage where cellulose fibres are carefully deposited in water to form a delicate sheet of paper. These fibres are derived from pulped wood obtained from trees, reflecting the mill's commitment to sustainable practices. The scale of this industrial marvel is awe-inspiring, as it represents just one part of an extensive operation owned by Ilim Pulp company. With ownership over multiple mills and logging companies, Ilim Pulp has established itself as not only Russia's largest pulp and forestry company but also one of the world's largest. In fact, by 2003, they were producing a staggering 2.8 million tons of paper annually. The photograph was taken on April 10th, 2006, capturing both the advanced technological advancements present within this Russian factory and its significant contribution to Europe's thriving paper industry. The wet environment surrounding the machinery emphasizes its crucial role in squeezing and draining excess water from each sheet before proceeding further into production. As we observe this snapshot frozen in time, we gain insight into an essential aspect of our modern lives – how something as ubiquitous as paper comes to be through meticulous processes driven by cutting-edge technology. This image serves as a testament to human ingenuity while reminding us that even seemingly ordinary objects have extraordinary stories behind them.
