Ovarian primordial follicles, micrograph C016 / 0518
Ovarian primordial follicles. Light micrograph of a section through the cortex of a neonatal ovary, showing clusters of primordial follicles each containing a single oocyte (egg cell) surrounded by a layer of follicle, or granulose, cells. The oocytes are the female germline cells. At birth in humans there may be up to one million primordial follicles in a pair of ovaries. Primordial follicles remain arrested in development until activated to enter a prolonged growth and maturation phase called folliculogenesis. In postnatal and early adult life perhaps 10-20 primordial follicles are recruited each day to enter the follicular growth process resulting in the gradual decline in their number such that at menopause, only a few hundred remain. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of ovarian primordial follicles, providing a glimpse into the fascinating world of female reproductive development. The image, captured under a light microscope, depicts a section through the cortex of a neonatal ovary, revealing clusters of primordial follicles. Each primordial follicle contains a single oocyte or egg cell, enveloped by a protective layer of granulose cells. These oocytes are crucial as they represent the female germline cells responsible for reproduction. Astonishingly, at birth in humans, there can be up to one million primordial follicles present in both ovaries. However, these precious structures remain dormant until activated to enter an extended growth and maturation phase known as folliculogenesis. Throughout postnatal and early adult life, approximately 10-20 primordial follicles are recruited each day to initiate this growth process. Consequently, their numbers gradually decline over time until menopause when only a few hundred remain. The magnification used in this micrograph allows us to appreciate the delicate details and complex organization within these developing ovarian structures. This image not only highlights the incredible intricacy of our biological systems but also serves as a reminder of the remarkable journey that takes place within our bodies from birth to maturity.
