Ovarian artery, SEM

Ovarian artery. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an ovarian artery that has been freeze-fractured to show internal details. An ovarian artery is a blood vessel that supplies oxygenated blood to the ovary. In cross-section the endothelium (tunica intima) can be seen in red, comprising of specialised epithelial cells that line the circulatory system. Surrounding this layer is the tunica media (brown), which is made up of smooth muscle cells and elastic tissue. The outermost layer (green), which surrounds the tunica media, is called the tunica externa, and is mainly composed of collagen. This collagen anchors the blood vessels to nearby organs, providing stability. Magnification: x780 when printed 10 centimetres wide. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate details of an ovarian artery, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image has been freeze-fractured to reveal the internal structures in vivid color. The ovarian artery is a vital blood vessel responsible for supplying oxygenated blood to the ovary. In this cross-section view, we can observe the endothelium or tunica intima, represented by a striking red hue. These specialized epithelial cells form a lining along the circulatory system. Surrounding the tunica intima is the tunica media, depicted in brown tones. This layer consists of smooth muscle cells and elastic tissue that contribute to maintaining proper vascular function. The outermost layer, known as the tunica externa and shown in green shades, primarily comprises collagen fibers. This collagen acts as an anchor for blood vessels, ensuring stability and connecting them to nearby organs. With a magnification level of x780 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this SEM image offers us an up-close look into one of our body's essential arteries. It not only highlights its anatomical features but also emphasizes its biological significance within our overall circulatory system. This remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library provides valuable insights into human biology while showcasing the beauty found within our own bodies.
