Optical image of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365

Active galaxy NGC 1365. True-colour optical image of the active barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 in the constellation Fornax. This is an example of a Seyfert galaxy, which have a highly-energetic nucleus with an energy output comparable to that of quasars. The nucleus of this galaxy contains a powerful emitter of X-rays. This galaxy is a member of the Fornax Cluster of galaxies, a group which lies around 70 million light years away. NGC 1365 is one of the nearest of the Seyfert galaxies, most of which are extremely distant. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the optical image of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365, a mesmerizing active barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Fornax. Known for its highly-energetic nucleus, this Seyfert galaxy emits energy comparable to that of quasars. The powerful X-ray emitter within its nucleus adds to its enigmatic allure. Belonging to the Fornax Cluster of galaxies, which resides approximately 70 million light years away from us, NGC 1365 stands out as one of the closest known Seyfert galaxies. Most others are found at much greater distances in our vast universe. The true-colour composition presented here is a result of digitally combining photographs taken by the UK Schmidt Telescope in both blue and red light. This technique allows us to appreciate the intricate details and vibrant hues present within this galactic masterpiece. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring image, we are reminded of humanity's insatiable curiosity about our cosmos. Science continues to unravel secrets hidden within celestial bodies like NGC 1365, expanding our understanding of galactic evolution and cosmology itself. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and technological advancements in astronomy. It invites us into a world beyond our own while reminding us that there is still so much left unexplored in the depths of space.
