Ophiuchus constellations, 1829 C016 / 4397

Ophiuchus constellations. 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh (1829) by Kornelius Reissig, an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The title translates as: Presentation of constellations in 30 tables. This was the earliest Russian star atlas, and was based on earlier work by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776). The constellations are labelled in Cyrillic, represented by mythological figures and animals. This is Plate 11, showing the constellation of Ophiuchus between the head (upper right) and tail (left) of Serpens

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Ophiuchus constellations, taken from a 19th-century celestial atlas titled "Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh" by Kornelius Reissig. As an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg, Reissig created the earliest Russian star atlas based on earlier works by Bode and Flamsteed. Plate 11 of this historical masterpiece reveals the intricate constellation of Ophiuchus positioned between the head and tail of Serpens. The black background enhances the brilliance of this astronomical illustration, allowing each golden star to shine brightly against it. The Cyrillic labels add a touch of cultural richness as mythological figures and animals represent these constellations. Punched holes create a grid-like pattern that aids in locating specific stars within this vast cosmic map. Transporting us back to the early 1800s, this artwork provides a glimpse into celestial cartography during that era. It serves as both an educational tool and a testament to humanity's fascination with understanding our place in the universe. With its meticulous attention to detail and exquisite craftsmanship, this print is not only visually stunning but also holds immense historical significance. Whether you are an astronomy enthusiast or simply appreciate artistry from centuries past, this piece offers a window into our collective exploration of the night sky throughout history.
