Neptune. Pluto. Computer artwork of the planet Pluto
Pluto. Computer artwork of the planet Pluto (left), partially illuminated by the Sun (upper right). Pluto is the most distant planet in the solar system, orbiting the Sun in 248 Earth years at a distance of around 6000 million kilometres, nearly 40 times the distance of Earth from the Sun. Pluto is also the smallest of the planets. It has a diameter of about 2274 kilometres, less than a fifth that of Earth. It and its moon Charon (not seen) comprise rocks and ices. The ices are mainly water, with some nitrogen and methane. A very thin atmosphere (mostly nitrogen) is evolved when Pluto is closest to the Sun. Otherwise, the surface temperature is mostly below -200 degrees Celsius
