Monoceros constellations, 1829 C016 / 4413

Monoceros constellations. 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh (1829) by Kornelius Reissig, an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The title translates as: Presentation of constellations in 30 tables. This was the earliest Russian star atlas, based on earlier work by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776). The constellations are labelled in Cyrillic, represented by mythological figures and animals. This is Plate 27, showing the constellations of Monoceros (unicorn), Canis Minor and Canis Major, Puppis (poop deck), Columba (dove), Officina Typographica

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Monoceros constellations, taken from the celestial atlas "Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh" created by Kornelius Reissig in 1829. As an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg, Reissig meticulously crafted this early Russian star atlas based on previous works by Bode and Flamsteed. Plate 27 of this historical masterpiece reveals a black background adorned with intricate illustrations representing mythological figures and animals associated with each constellation. The Monoceros constellation, also known as the unicorn, takes center stage alongside Canis Minor and Canis Major. Puppis (poop deck), Columba (dove), and Officina Typographica are also featured within this celestial map. The constellations are labeled in Cyrillic script, adding a unique touch to their representation. This artwork is not only visually stunning but also serves as a significant piece of astronomical history. The gold leaf accents add an extra touch of elegance to its overall composition. Punched holes indicate coordinates on the grid-like diagram, providing astronomers with valuable information for navigating the night sky during that era. Plate 27 stands as a testament to Reissig's dedication to celestial cartography and his contribution to uranography during the 19th century. This print captures both the beauty and scientific significance of this remarkable star atlas, making it a must-have for any astronomy enthusiast or lover of historical artifacts.
