Michel Eugene Chevreul, French chemist
Michel Eugene Chevreul (1786-1889), French organic chemist. Chevreul was director of dyeing at the Gobelin tapestry factory. His best known work is on animal fats and soap making. In 1825 he patented, with Gay-Lussac, a process for making an improved candle from crude stearic acid. He was the first to show that the urine of diabetics contained glucose. He also worked on organic analysis, and the chemistry of drying oils (used in paints), waxes and natural dyes. As wells as on theories of colour, the use of divining rods, and (after he was 90) on the psychological effects of ageing

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Michel Eugene Chevreul, a remarkable French chemist who made significant contributions to the field of organic chemistry. Born in 1786 and living until 1889, Chevreul's legacy as a pioneer is undeniable. Renowned for his expertise in dyeing, he held the prestigious position of director at the Gobelin tapestry factory. One of Chevreul's most notable achievements was his collaboration with Gay-Lussac in patenting an innovative process for creating superior candles using crude stearic acid. Additionally, he made groundbreaking discoveries such as being the first to identify glucose in the urine of diabetics. Chevreul's scientific endeavors extended beyond candle-making and diabetes research. He delved into various areas including organic analysis, drying oils used in paints, waxes, natural dyes, theories of color perception, and even explored divining rods' efficacy. Remarkably, even after reaching 90 years old, he continued studying and investigating the psychological effects of aging. This stunning oil illustration captures Chevreul's essence—a distinguished Caucasian gentleman with piercing eyes reflecting wisdom accumulated through decades dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge. As we admire this historical artwork from Science Photo Library depicting one of history's greatest minds in chemistry—Michel Eugene Chevreul—we are reminded once again that true pioneers leave an indelible mark on our world through their tireless pursuit of knowledge and innovation.
