Mendeleyevs periodic table, 1869

Mendeleyevs periodic table, 1869. Mendeleyevs periodic table of 1869. This is the first version of the periodic table drawn up by the Russian chemist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleyev (1834-1907). He left gaps in the table for new elements, that were indeed later discovered, vindicating his theory. This version has the elements listed using chemical symbols, and ordered by atomic weight, but the fully correct chemical arrangement has not yet emerged. The final version (1871) had the elements arranged in the familiar vertical columns or groups. This version is dated (lower left) to 17 February 1869, and Mendeleyevs name is at top. This manuscript is from the Mendeleyev museum. Photographed in St Petersburg, Russia. See also H413/297. EDITORS COMMENTS

This photograph showcases the very first version of Mendeleyev's periodic table, drawn up by the brilliant Russian chemist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleyev in 1869. This groundbreaking creation revolutionized the field of chemistry and laid the foundation for our understanding of chemical elements. Mendeleyev's visionary approach included leaving intentional gaps within the table to accommodate future discoveries, a bold move that would ultimately validate his theory. Indeed, as time went on, new elements were discovered exactly where he had predicted, solidifying his place in scientific history. In this particular print, we can observe the elements listed using their chemical symbols and ordered by atomic weight. However, it is important to note that this version does not represent the fully correct arrangement that emerged later on. The final version of Mendeleyev's periodic table in 1871 organized the elements into familiar vertical columns or groups. Dated February 17th, 1869 (as indicated at the lower left), this manuscript bears Mendeleyev's name at its top and is preserved within the esteemed Mendeleyev Museum in St Petersburg, Russia. Its hand-written pages hold immense historical significance as they document a pivotal moment in science when our understanding of chemistry took a giant leap forward. This remarkable print from Science Photo Library captures not only an iconic piece of scientific literature but also serves as a testament to human curiosity and ingenuity throughout history.
