Malaria control operations, 20th century

Malaria control operations. Stearman biplane spraying an insecticide as part of malaria control operations. Stearman biplanes, introduced in 1934, were used extensively after the Second World War in the USA to spray crops. One of the insecticides commonly used, until it was banned, was dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). Mosquitoes are the vector for malaria transmission. Preventing mosquitoes from breeding is one of the ways used to control the spread of malaria. Photographed in Savannah, Georgia, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of malaria control operations. Taken in Savannah, Georgia during the 20th century, it showcases a Stearman biplane spraying insecticide as part of efforts to combat the spread of malaria. Stearman biplanes were introduced in 1934 and became widely used after World War II for crop spraying across the United States. One commonly employed insecticide at that time was dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), although it was later banned due to its harmful effects on the environment. Malaria is transmitted through mosquitoes, making mosquito breeding prevention crucial in controlling its spread. This photograph exemplifies one method employed by public health officials - aerial spraying - to target areas prone to mosquito infestation. The image portrays a vast rural landscape with fields stretching into the horizon, highlighting both the technological advancements and ecological considerations involved in combating this disease. The Stearman biplane soars above a swampy area, symbolizing how these operations reached even remote locations where mosquitoes thrived. With its historical significance and nod towards aviation's role in public health initiatives, this print offers an intriguing glimpse into past efforts to control malaria transmission. It serves as a reminder of our ongoing battle against vector-borne diseases and highlights how far we have come since then in developing more sustainable methods for disease control.
