The voicebox (larynx, top centre) is also shown. In the chest, the trachea splits in the bronchi, one for each lung. It is in the alveoli that gas exchange takes place, with oxygen passing into the blood and carbon dioxide (a waste product of respiration) passing out of the blood into the lungs
