Lunar craters, 19th century

Lunar craters. 19th-century artwork of some of the craters visible on the near side of the Moon. The three craters at upper left are: Fra Mauro Crater (top left, 101 kilometres across), Bonpland Crater (centre left, 60 kilometres across), and Parry Crater (near centre, 47 kilometres across). The small crater at lower centre is Tolansky Crater (13 kilometres across). At lower right is Guericke Crater (63 kilometres across). The mapping of the Moon with telescopes started with Galileo in 1610, and then developed further as telescopes improved to allow mountain and crater shadows to be recorded. This artwork dates from 1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork showcases the intricate details of lunar craters visible on the near side of the Moon. The print captures a moment in history when mapping the Moon with telescopes was still in its early stages, dating back to Galileo's observations in 1610. As telescopic technology improved over time, astronomers were able to record even the faintest shadows cast by mountains and craters. The image highlights several prominent craters that dominate the lunar landscape. At the upper left corner, we can see three distinct craters: Fra Mauro Crater, boasting an impressive diameter of 101 kilometers; Bonpland Crater at its center measuring 60 kilometers across; and Parry Crater slightly below it with a diameter of 47 kilometers. Towards lower center lies Tolansky Crater, a smaller formation spanning only 13 kilometers. Guericke Crater takes up space at lower right, stretching across an expansive area of approximately 63 kilometers. This monochrome illustration beautifully captures these rocky formations against a browned backdrop, providing us with a glimpse into our celestial neighbor's rugged terrain. Detlev van Ravenswaay's artwork from 1880 not only serves as a historical document but also evokes wonder and curiosity about our solar system's mysteries. It reminds us how far astronomical exploration has come since those early days while honoring the meticulous work conducted by scientists throughout history to unravel the secrets hidden within our moon's cratered surface.
