Kidney tubules
Kidney tubules. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of proximal convoluted tubules (dark brown) in the kidney. The proximal convoluted tubules function to reabsorb water, glucose and other small molecules from the filtrate, producing a concentrated urine. The tubules consist of a lumen (interior) lined with cuboidal epithelial cells. These cells are covered in many finger-like projections known as microvilli, which serve to increase the cells surface area for reabsorption. The reabsorbed molecules move into the interstitial fluid of the kidney and are absorbed back into the blood. The liquid in the tubules passes to the bladder. Magnification: x420 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of kidney tubules, providing a glimpse into the remarkable functionality of our urinary system. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are presented with a mesmerizing view of proximal convoluted tubules in the kidney. The dark brown hue represents these tubules, which play a crucial role in reabsorbing water, glucose, and other small molecules from the filtrate. This process ultimately leads to the production of concentrated urine. The interior of these tubules is lined with cuboidal epithelial cells that form a lumen. What makes this image even more fascinating are the numerous finger-like projections covering these cells known as microvilli. These tiny structures significantly increase surface area for efficient reabsorption. As reabsorbed molecules move into the interstitial fluid and get absorbed back into the bloodstream, liquid within these tubules eventually passes on to reach its final destination - the bladder. With a magnification level of x420 when printed 10cm wide, this photograph allows us to appreciate both the complexity and elegance present within our own bodies. It serves as a reminder of how intricately designed systems work together harmoniously to maintain our physiological well-being.
