Jumping spider head, SEM
Jumping spider head (family Salticidae), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). A jumping spider stalks its prey before leaping on it from a few centimetres away. Four pairs of eyes (green) lie on its head. The large chelicerae (at lower centre) are pincers that are used to tear up its food. Either side of these are the two palps, sensory structures for feeling and manipulation. Magnification: x18 at 6x6cm size
