Judas tree flower, SEM

Judas tree flower. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the reproductive parts of the flower of the Judas tree, or redbud (Cercis sp.). The male stamens comprise a long filament (green) bearing a brown anther. The anthers produce the flowers pollen, the male sex cells. The female carpel comprises a long, thick style bearing a small stigma (pale, centre right). Pollination occurs when pollen lands on the stigma. It then burrows down through the style to reach the female sex cell (ovum) in the ovary (not seen) at the base of the style. Magnification unknown

Anther Anthers Carpel Filament Filaments Flowering Part Parts Pistil Pollen Re Production Reproductive Sexual Stamen Stamens Stigma Style Judas Tree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Judas tree flower, captured through a colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The image reveals the reproductive parts of this remarkable flower species, known as redbud or Cercis sp. The male stamens take center stage in this composition, featuring a long green filament adorned with a brown anther. These anthers play a crucial role in producing pollen, which serves as the male sex cells for fertilization. On the other hand, the female carpel is characterized by its long and thick style that culminates in a small stigma positioned towards the pale center-right. The process of pollination unfolds when pollen lands delicately on the stigma's surface. From there, it embarks on an incredible journey down through the style to reach its ultimate destination -the ovum or female sex cell nestled within the ovary at the base of the style. Magnified to reveal extraordinary details, this SEM captures nature's ingenious design for sexual reproduction in plants. It offers us a glimpse into one of nature's most fascinating processes while highlighting both male and female components essential for successful fertilization. This mesmerizing image from Science Photo Library invites us to marvel at nature's complexity and appreciate how even tiny flowers hold secrets waiting to be discovered under closer inspection.
