EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases John Fuller, an influential English philanthropist whose legacy continues to inspire generations. Born in North Stoneham, Hampshire in 1757, Fuller's life took a significant turn at the tender age of four when he lost his father, a local clergyman. Despite this early setback, young Fuller displayed remarkable resilience and went on to study at Eton College. In 1777, fortune smiled upon him as his uncle passed away, leaving behind vast estates in Sussex and plantations in Jamaica. This newfound wealth allowed Fuller to embark on a lifelong journey of philanthropy that would shape countless lives for the better. Fuller's generosity knew no bounds. He became an ardent supporter and sponsor of London's esteemed Royal Institution, lending them a substantial sum of £1000 without ever seeking its return. His benevolence extended further as he endowed the prestigious Fullerian chairs in both chemistry and physiology. Not content with these contributions alone, Fuller built an observatory within his sprawling estate at Brightling in Sussex while also financing Eastbourne's first lifeboat and Beachy Head's iconic lighthouse. Affectionately known as "Mad Jack" by the public who admired him greatly, John Fuller left an indelible mark on British society during his tenure as Member of Parliament for Southampton from 1780-1784 and later for Sussex from 1801-1812. Henry Singleton immortalized this extraordinary man through his masterful painting which now graces the halls of London's Royal Institution—a fitting tribute to one whose dedication to philanthropy has stood the test of time.
