Born in 1527, Dee's intellectual prowess led him to Cambridge University where he later became a Fellow of Trinity College. However, it was his ability to select an astrologically favorable day for Queen Elizabeth I's coronation that earned him her favor and a place in the royal court. Dee's reputation as a sorcerer and alchemist grew during his time at court as he delved into casting horoscopes and communicating with the spirit world. Despite facing suspicions from those around him, his fascination with the supernatural only intensified in later life. Unfortunately, this path ultimately led to his downfall and disrepute. The artwork captured here dates back to 1841 by Charles Knight in London. It portrays Dee as a distinguished gentleman with hints of mystery surrounding him. With elements such as astronomy tools and geometric shapes adorning the portrait, it reflects not only his interest in science but also his involvement in occult practices.
