Jeune syndrome, CT scans C018 / 0411
Jeune syndrome. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scans of the chest of a 2 year old with Jeune syndrome, also known as asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy. This inherited disease affects the development of the bones and cartilage and causes the ribs to be smaller, and therefore the rib cage to be narrower, than normal. This doesn t allow the lungs to develop probably and prevents normal inhalation. It is often fatal in the early years and very few patients live into their teens

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the devastating effects of Jeune syndrome on a 2-year-old child's chest. Also known as asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy, this inherited disease disrupts the normal development of bones and cartilage, resulting in smaller ribs and a narrower rib cage than usual. The consequences are dire, hindering proper lung development and impeding regular inhalation. Regrettably, Jeune syndrome often proves fatal during early childhood, with only a few patients surviving into their teenage years. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the challenges faced by those affected by this rare disorder. The vibrant colors in this computed tomography (CT) scan highlight the abnormality present in the child's respiratory system. Through cutting-edge medical imaging technology such as CT scans and X-ray machines, healthcare professionals can diagnose conditions like Jeune syndrome accurately. As we gaze upon this photograph, we witness both the strength and vulnerability encapsulated within our human bodies. It prompts us to reflect on the importance of pediatric medicine in understanding hereditary disorders that impact young lives profoundly. ZEPHYR/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY has expertly captured not only an extraordinary medical image but also an emotional narrative that resonates deeply with viewers worldwide.
