Imperial Astronomical Observatory, China
Imperial Astronomical Observatory, Beijing (Peking), China. This observatory was built during the Ming Dynasty (1442) to facilitate both astronomical purposes and seafaring navigation. It was refitted in the late 17th century by the Jesuits. Additional bronze instruments were supervised by Ferdinand Verbiest (1623-1688), a Flemish priest and a special advisor to the Qing court regarding the correction of the Chinese calendar. Tycho Brahes Mechanica (1598) had a strong influence on Verbiest and hence the instruments were based on Brahes designs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Imperial Astronomical Observatory in Beijing, China. Built during the Ming Dynasty in 1442, this remarkable structure served a dual purpose of aiding astronomical studies and facilitating seafaring navigation. In the late 17th century, it underwent renovations under the supervision of Jesuits, with additional bronze instruments overseen by Ferdinand Verbiest. Verbiest, a Flemish priest and special advisor to the Qing court on matters related to correcting the Chinese calendar, drew inspiration from Tycho Brahe's Mechanica (1598). This influence is evident in the design of these instruments that were based on Brahe's innovative concepts. The photograph beautifully captures not only the historical significance but also highlights various elements such as a quadrant, bronze instruments, celestial globes, and spheres. The vibrant colors used in this mediaeval illustration add an artistic touch to this technological marvel. With its rich history dating back centuries ago and its association with renowned figures like Verbiest and Brahe, this observatory stands as a testament to China's scientific achievements during ancient times. It serves as a reminder of how technology has evolved over time while preserving our fascination for astronomy. Science Photo Library presents this stunning image that transports us back to an era where science met artistry within architectural wonders like Beijing's Imperial Astronomical Observatory.
