Human eye, infrared image C013 / 7322

MODEL RELEASED. Human eye, close-up infrared image. This is the right-hand eye of a 21-year-old man, with raised eyebrow and distended pupil. The latter indicates that the image was obtained in the dark or in dim lighting. Infrared light can be used to see in the dark. It can also be used to visualize subcutaneous structures (those below the surface of the skin) that are not visible in normal lighting. These structures include superficial veins (one at centre left). Other applications of infrared imaging include recording the ocular surface temperature (OST), and tracking eye movements

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a human eye in infrared imaging. The right-hand eye of a 21-year-old man is featured, with a raised eyebrow and a distended pupil indicating that the image was captured in dim lighting or darkness. Infrared light, known for its ability to see in the dark, unveils subcutaneous structures beneath the skin that are invisible under normal lighting conditions. The image reveals fascinating elements such as superficial veins visible at the center left, which are typically hidden from sight. Beyond its diagnostic applications, infrared imaging can also record ocular surface temperature and track eye movements. The subject's wide-eyed expression adds an element of surprise and fear to this thought-provoking photograph. The monochrome palette enhances the focus on anatomical features like the iris, vein patterns, and even individual eyelashes. Larry Dunstan's expert lens captures not only scientific precision but also evokes curiosity about our own biology. This print serves as a reminder of how technology can unveil hidden aspects of our bodies while showcasing their beauty and complexity.
