Henry Coxwell, Aeronaut

Henry Tracey Coxwell (1819-1900), English aeronaut who, though a qualified dentist, became a professional aeronaut in 1848. By 1862 he had made over 400 ascents and in that year he piloted the balloon for the Greenwich Obsevatory Superintendent of Meteorology Dr. James Glaisher, to take barometric and other measurements at increasing altitudes. This was the first of a number of voyages by Glaisher and Coxwell making important contributions to the establishment of the science of meteorology. With Glaisher he attained the greatest height recorded, nearly 12, 000 metres. Coxwell was an advocate of the use of balloons in wartime, so it is notable that in 2012 the US military in Afghanistan had 86 tethered unmanned aerostats (balloons) employed on surveillance and threat detection duties, a number which is set to increase

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Henry Coxwell, a remarkable figure in the field of aeronautics during the 19th century. Originally trained as a dentist, Coxwell's passion for flying led him to become a professional aeronaut in 1848. By 1862, he had already completed over 400 ascents and embarked on an extraordinary journey alongside Dr. James Glaisher, the Superintendent of Meteorology at Greenwich Observatory. Their groundbreaking expedition aimed to gather barometric and other crucial measurements at increasing altitudes, contributing significantly to the development of meteorology as a science. Together, they achieved an astonishing feat by reaching nearly 12,000 meters – the highest altitude ever recorded at that time. Notably, Coxwell advocated for employing balloons in wartime operations. This perspective gains relevance when considering that modern warfare has embraced similar concepts with tethered unmanned aerostats utilized for surveillance and threat detection purposes. The photograph captures both the pioneering spirit of early aviation enthusiasts like Coxwell and their enduring impact on scientific advancements. It serves as a testament to his dedication towards pushing boundaries and expanding our understanding of weather patterns through daring aerial expeditions. Science Photo Library proudly presents this historical image documenting Henry Coxwell's significant contributions to meteorology and his role in shaping our perception of flight during this transformative era in human history.
