Hen flea. Coloured scanning electron micrograph

Hen flea. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a hen flea (Ceratophyllus gallinae). This flea is a parasite on dry nesting birds, such as the blue tit and chickens. The head (upper right) is helmet-shaped and the body is laterally flattened, adaptions which allow easy movement through the feathers of the host. The antennae can be withdrawn into grooves on the side of the head. The mandibles with long palps are modified for the blood sucking habit of this insect. Most fleas remain on the host only while feeding. This flea also occupies the nest of the bird. Magnification: x30 at 5x7cm size

Blood Sucker Insecta Parasite Parasitic

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a hen flea, captured through a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The image reveals the helmet-shaped head and laterally flattened body of this tiny parasite, which is commonly found on dry nesting birds like blue tits and chickens. These unique adaptations allow for easy movement through the feathers of its host. Notably, the antennae can be withdrawn into grooves on the side of its head. The mandibles with long palps are specifically modified for the blood-sucking habit of this insect. While most fleas only remain on their hosts while feeding, this particular species also occupies the bird's nest. At a magnification level of x30 in a 5x7cm size, every minute detail becomes apparent in this stunning photograph. With its vibrant colours and remarkable clarity, this image provides an insight into the world of these parasitic creatures that coexist with various avian species. It serves as a testament to nature's diversity and complexity within zoology and entomology studies alike. This photograph is part of Science Photo Library's extensive collection dedicated to showcasing wildlife from around the globe, capturing moments that inspire awe and fascination among viewers interested in fauna and animal life sciences.
