Goniatite fossil

Goniatite fossil. Fossilised shell of a goniatite (Goniatites sp.) The goniatites were one of the primitive ammonoids which are found as fossils in Devonian and Carboniferous strata (dating from 395-345 & 345-280 million years ago respectively). Ammonites were marine molluscs with a coiled shell and distinct head and mouth region surrounded by tentacles. They are similar in appearance to the modern day nautilus. The last ammonites became extinct in the Upper Cretaceous Period, about 65 million years ago. The size of this fossil is approx. 50mm

Ammonite Fossil Fossil Invertebrate Fossils Golden Ratio Helix Spiral Goniatite Palaeontology Section

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of natural history - a Goniatite fossil. Preserved in time, this fossilized shell belonged to one of the primitive ammonoids known as Goniatites (Goniatites sp. ), which thrived during the Devonian and Carboniferous periods, dating back an astonishing 395-280 million years ago. Ammonites were fascinating marine molluscs characterized by their coiled shells and distinctive head surrounded by tentacles. Resembling their modern-day relative, the nautilus, these creatures roamed ancient seas with grace and beauty. However, their existence came to an end during the Upper Cretaceous Period around 65 million years ago. Measuring approximately 50mm in size, this particular specimen exhibits intricate details that mesmerize any observer. Its spiral shape follows the timeless Fibonacci sequence or golden ratio found abundantly in nature's design principles. The delicate sections within its helix-like structure reveal glimpses into prehistoric life and offer valuable insights for paleontologists studying Earth's past. Alfred Pasieka masterfully captures the essence of this Goniatite fossil through his lens, allowing us to appreciate its exquisite form and historical significance. This awe-inspiring image serves as a reminder of our planet's rich geological heritage and invites us to marvel at the wonders that lie beneath our feet.
