Garden centipede. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a garden centipede (Lithobius sp.). A centipedes body is divided into segments, each containing a pair of legs. The number of segments varies from 12 to over 100. The legs present on the first trunk segment (upper centre) terminate in a pointed claw which contains poison glands. The centipede uses these claws to seize and kill its prey. Lithobius centipedes are ground-dwelling hunters normally found under stones.
