Gallio scorpion fossil C018 / 9405

Gallio scorpion fossil. Sandstone block containing a fossilised specimen of a Gallio scorpion. The scorpion is 6 centimetres long. This specimen dates from around 240 million years ago, during the Triassic. This fossil was found in the Voltzia sandstone quarries of the Vosges mountain range in northern France, and is part of the Grauvogel-Gall collection, held in Strasbourg, France. At this time, there was a large delta in what is now the Vosges region. Repeated sediment deposition and droughts led to the formation of fossils

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Gallio scorpion fossil, preserved in a sandstone block. The fossilized specimen measures 6 centimeters long and dates back approximately 240 million years to the Triassic period. Discovered in the Voltzia sandstone quarries of the Vosges mountain range in northern France, this extraordinary find is now part of the prestigious Grauvogel-Gall collection housed in Strasbourg. During the Triassic era, when this ancient scorpion roamed, the Vosges region was characterized by a vast delta. The repeated deposition of sediment and periods of drought contributed to the formation of fossils like this one. Against a striking black background, this print allows us to marvel at nature's intricate creations. With its historical significance and contribution to zoology and paleontology, this single specimen offers valuable insights into our planet's past. Its presence within an esteemed museum collection highlights its importance as an educational tool for understanding prehistoric life forms. Expertly captured by Gilles Mermet from Science Photo Library, this image not only captures the beauty of natural history but also serves as a testament to human curiosity about our world's rich biological heritage.
