A fossilized ammonite which has been sectioned and polished to reveal its internal structure. During fossilisation, the minerals of the ammonites shell have been replaced by pyrite (iron sulphide), a yellowish metallic compound also known as fools gold. The cavities within the shell are filled with calcite (calcium carbonate), which appears a golden yellow due to the presence of iron impurities. Ammonites are extinct molluscs of the class Cephalopoda which lived from the Devonian period (approximately 400 million years ago) to the end of the Cretaceous (64 million years ago)
