False-colour SEM showing two renal glomeruli

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a section of kidney cortex, showing two glomeruli (red & green). A glomerulus is a tiny knot of blood capillaries which lies cupped within a Bowmans capsule (seen here as a U-shaped cavity) and forms part of a kidney nephron. Blood plasma filters through the walls of the glomerulus into the Bowmans capsule and drains into a convoluted tube known as a renal tubule. Here, useful subtances are reabsorbed into the blood, while the remaining waste fluid passes into a collecting duct, enroute to the bladder. The blue region of the image shows renal tubules in various planes of section. Mag: x220 at 6x7cm, x110 at 35mm size. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate beauty of the human kidney, specifically focusing on two renal glomeruli. The false-colour scanning electron micrograph reveals a mesmerizing display of colors, with one glomerulus depicted in vibrant red and the other in striking green. A glomerulus, as seen here within its protective Bowman's capsule - portrayed as a U-shaped cavity - is a delicate cluster of blood capillaries that plays an essential role in kidney function. Acting as part of a nephron, it filters blood plasma through its walls into the Bowman's capsule before progressing into a convoluted tube known as a renal tubule. The blue region visible in this image represents various planes of section showcasing renal tubules. Within these tubules, valuable substances are reabsorbed back into the bloodstream while waste fluid continues its journey towards a collecting duct enroute to the bladder. At magnifications x220 for 6x7cm prints and x110 for 35mm size prints, this photograph offers an extraordinary glimpse into our urinary system's inner workings. Its false-color technique adds depth and visual appeal to an otherwise microscopic world hidden within our bodies. Captured by Science Photo Library, renowned for their expertise in anatomical imagery and scientific photography, this print serves not only as an awe-inspiring piece but also as an educational tool highlighting the complexity and beauty found within our kidneys' remarkable structure.
