F / col SEM of head of fruit fly, Drosophila sp

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Drosophila has been widely used for genetic experiments, particularly on mutation, because it is easy to raise in large numbers & reproduces rapidly. Two large compound eyes are visible on either side of the head. The antennae are the small fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions called aristas. Bristles, or setae, cover the fly. Magnification: x21 at 35mm size, x42 at 6x7cm size. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © CNRI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate details of a fruit fly's head, captured through a false-colour scanning electron microscope (SEM). The subject of this image is Drosophila melanogaster, commonly known as the fruit fly, which has played a pivotal role in genetic experiments due to its ease of cultivation and rapid reproduction. The SEM reveals two large compound eyes that dominate either side of the fly's head, showcasing their remarkable complexity. These eyes are crucial for the insect's survival and navigation in its environment. Additionally, we can observe the antennae, small fleshy pads adorned with bristle-like extensions called aristas. These antennae serve as sensory organs for detecting chemical cues and vibrations from their surroundings. The entire body of this tiny creature is covered in bristles or setae, which provide it with stability during flight and aid in various sensory functions. This detailed view highlights how every aspect of this minuscule organism serves a purpose within its ecosystem. With an impressive magnification level at both 35mm and 6x7cm sizes - x21 and x42 respectively - this photograph allows us to appreciate the beauty hidden within even the tiniest creatures on our planet. It reminds us that there is much more to explore beyond what meets the naked eye when delving into nature's wonders.
