Explorer 24 satellite, 1964

Explorer 24 satellite. This 12-foot (3.66-metre) diameter inflatable sphere (a balloon satellite) was developed at Langley Research Center, Virginia, USA. Launched on 21 November 1964 and inflated in orbit, it provided information on the relationship between solar radiation and air density in Earths upper atmosphere. The mission was named Atmospheric Density-B or the second Air Density Explorer. Data was recorded until 18 October 1968 when it decayed from orbit. Photographed on 28 September 1964

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Explorer 24 satellite, a groundbreaking technological achievement from 1964. Developed at Langley Research Center in Virginia, USA, this inflatable sphere measuring an impressive 12 feet in diameter was a true engineering marvel of its time. Launched on November 21st, 1964, the Explorer 24 satellite was inflated in orbit and played a vital role in gathering valuable information about the correlation between solar radiation and air density within Earth's upper atmosphere. Its mission, known as Atmospheric Density-B or the second Air Density Explorer, lasted until October 18th, 1968 when it eventually decayed from orbit. In this snapshot taken on September 28th, 1964 at Langley Research Center's workshop, we witness an American male engineer diligently constructing this historic satellite. The image not only highlights the advanced technology employed during that era but also reflects the significant contributions made by individuals like him to advance our understanding of meteorology and space exploration. As we delve into history through this monochrome photograph, we are reminded of how far humanity has come in terms of scientific progress. This momentous event marked another milestone for North America during the intense Space Race era of the mid-20th century. The print is courtesy of Science Photo Library and serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance throughout our quest for knowledge about our planet and beyond.
