Eugene Cernan on Moon Apollo 17

The last man on the Moon. Astronaut Eugene Cernan stands on the Moon during the Apollo 17 mission. At right is part of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), with its communications antenna. Apollo 17 arrived on the Moon in the Taurus-Littrow site at the southern edge of the Mare Serenitatis on 11 December 1972. Cernan and fellow astronaut Harrison Schmitt spent 72 hours on the Moon, performing three excursions in the LRV. This was the last Apollo Moon mission, and Cernan was the last human to stand on the surface of the Moon. Astronaut Ronald Evans remained in the orbiting Command Module. The astronauts returned safely to Earth on 19 December 1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in human exploration. Astronaut Eugene Cernan, the last man to set foot on the Moon, stands proudly against the lunar landscape during the Apollo 17 mission. The image showcases Cernan's remarkable achievement and serves as a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge and adventure. Visible at his side is part of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), an essential tool that allowed astronauts to traverse the Moon's surface with ease. Equipped with its communications antenna, this vehicle played a crucial role in facilitating scientific experiments and collecting valuable samples. Apollo 17 touched down on December 11th, 1972, at the Taurus-Littrow site near Mare Serenitatis' southern edge. Over their three-day stay on our celestial neighbor, Cernan and fellow astronaut Harrison Schmitt embarked on three excursions using the LRV. Meanwhile, astronaut Ronald Evans remained aboard the orbiting Command Module. As they bid farewell to Earth's satellite on December 19th, 1972, these brave explorers left an indelible mark on history. Their safe return marked not only an end to NASA's Apollo program but also symbolized humanity's temporary departure from lunar exploration. This awe-inspiring photograph serves as a reminder of our capacity for extraordinary achievements when we dare to push boundaries and reach for new horizons in space exploration.
