Ernest Bazin roller ship, 1897

Ernest Bazin roller ship. 19th-century artwork of a design of roller ship by French inventor Ernest Bazin. This one has four pairs of disc-shaped floats that rotate as the craft moves through the water using propellers. A boat similar to this, called the Ernest-Bazin after its inventor, had three pairs of floats. It was launched at St Denis in 1896. However, the design was found to be impracticable and an attempt in 1897 to cross the Channel exposed flaws. Bazin died the next year in 1898. Artwork from the first volume (1897) of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton (1872-1940)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the innovative roller ship design by French inventor Ernest Bazin in 1897. The artwork, featured in the first volume of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle, depicts a remarkable vessel equipped with four pairs of disc-shaped floats that rotate as it glides through the water using propellers. This engineering marvel was an evolution from its predecessor, the Ernest-Bazin boat, which had three pairs of floats and was launched in St Denis just a year prior. Although this technological feat held great promise for maritime transportation during its time, it ultimately proved to be impracticable. In 1897, an ambitious attempt to cross the Channel exposed flaws in Bazin's design. Despite his best efforts, he could not overcome these setbacks before his untimely death in 1898. The image transports us back to a significant era in history when inventors like Bazin pushed boundaries and dared to dream big. It serves as a reminder that even failed endeavors contribute to progress by paving the way for future innovations. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece, we can't help but appreciate both the ambition behind this invention and the dedication of those who strive to push technological boundaries beyond their limits.
