Emulsion photo of cosmic ray sulphur nucleus
The power of cosmic rays is shown in this emulsion photo of a cosmic ray sulphur nucleus. The nucleus enters at top & collides with a nucleus in the emulsion. The collision produces a spray of other particles: a fluorine nucleus (the dense track heading straight down the picture), other nuclear fragments (denser tracks) & 16 pions (fainter tracks). The length of the sulphur track is 0. 11 mm. The curlicues adorning the sulphur track are electrons it has knocked out of atoms in passing. The photo was taken in 1950 by Cecil Powell, the English physicist who pioneered the use of photographic emulsions to record particle tracks

Atomic Cosmic Ray Emulsion Photo Image Nucleus Particle Physics Particles Pion Rays
EDITORS COMMENTS
This emulsion photo captures the sheer power and beauty of cosmic rays. Taken in 1950 by the brilliant physicist Cecil Powell, it showcases a cosmic ray sulphur nucleus entering from the top and colliding with a nucleus within the emulsion. The result is an explosion of particles, each leaving its mark on this mesmerizing print. The dense track heading straight down the picture represents a fluorine nucleus, while other nuclear fragments can be seen as denser tracks. Fainter tracks reveal the presence of 16 pions, adding to the intricate dance of particles frozen in time. Measuring at an impressive length of 0.11 mm, the sulphur track itself is adorned with delicate curlicues – remnants of electrons knocked out from passing atoms. It serves as a testament to both the destructive force and intricate nature of these subatomic interactions. Powell's pioneering use of photographic emulsions revolutionized particle physics research, allowing scientists to record and study elusive particle tracks like never before. This image stands as a testament to his groundbreaking work and continues to inspire awe in those who gaze upon it. Displayed proudly by Science Photo Library, this photograph not only showcases scientific achievement but also serves as a reminder that there are still countless mysteries waiting to be unraveled within our vast universe.
