Emergency war housing. Prefabricated housing model at Scott Circle, Washington DC, USA, during the Second World War. Plans from March 1945 were to ship 30, 000 such houses to the UK under the Lend-Lease agreement to supply the British Temporary Housing Programme. However, the Lend-Lease agreement was terminated in September and only 8462 were ever built. This view shows the kitchen entrance, with the front entrance at left and the bedrooms at right. Photographed in 1945 by Sherrel J. Lakey for a US government photography project that documented everyday American life from 1935 and during the war

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a piece of history from the Second World War era. Taken in 1945 by Sherrel J. Lakey, it showcases an emergency war housing model at Scott Circle in Washington DC, USA. The image reveals the kitchen entrance, with the front entrance on the left and bedrooms on the right. During this time, plans were underway to ship 30,000 such houses to the United Kingdom under the Lend-Lease agreement as part of their Temporary Housing Programme. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, only 8,462 houses were ever constructed before the termination of the agreement in September. The photograph not only highlights architectural and technological aspects but also sheds light on industrial engineering during wartime. It serves as a reminder of how nations came together to aid one another during times of crisis. This monochrome image is part of a US government photography project that documented everyday American life starting from 1935 and throughout the war years. Its historical significance lies within its portrayal of civilian life amidst global conflict. Preserved by LIBRARY OF CONGRESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY collection, this photograph stands as a testament to temporary housing programs implemented during World War II and offers viewers a glimpse into North American history in the mid-20th century.
