Electron-positron collision C014 / 1799

Two sets of particle tracks from electron-positron collisions seen by the ALEPH (Apparatus for LEP physics at CERN) detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. ALEPH was built around the large electron positron (LEP) accelerator ring, which ran from 1989-2000. The collisions both produced a Z boson. The particle is not seen, but is revealed through its decay products; a muon, an antimuon (both shown by yellow lines radiating from centre) and a photon (yellow lines at top right of right-hand image)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate traces left behind by two sets of particle tracks resulting from electron-positron collisions. Taken by the ALEPH detector at CERN, this image offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of subatomic particles and their behavior. The ALEPH (Apparatus for LEP physics at CERN) detector was specifically designed to study collisions within the large electron positron (LEP) accelerator ring, which operated between 1989 and 2000. In this particular collision event, both electrons and positrons produced a Z boson, an elusive particle that remains unseen but is unveiled through its decay products. Highlighted in yellow lines radiating from the center are two crucial decay products: muons and antimuons. These charged particles play a significant role in unraveling the mysteries of cosmology and understanding the fundamental structure of matter. Additionally, a photon can be observed as yellow lines located at the top right corner of one image. Set against a vibrant blue background, this print not only captures scientific curiosity but also represents decades of research conducted at CERN – Europe's premier particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. It serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our universe's building blocks and sheds light on how scientists meticulously trace trajectories to comprehend complex interactions occurring at minuscule scales. In essence, this visually stunning image encapsulates both scientific achievement and aesthetic beauty while offering glimpses into groundbreaking experiments conducted during the 20th century.
