EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate inner workings of one of the iconic cable-driven lifts that transported visitors up and down the Eiffel Tower during its early years. The artwork, featured in a 19th-century edition of La Science Illustree, offers a glimpse into the engineering marvel that captivated tourists at the Universal Exposition of 1889. The image depicts a scene after the grand opening of the Eiffel Tower, with both male and female visitors eagerly exploring this technological wonder. The Roux-Combaluzier lifts, depicted here in stunning detail, were capable of carrying up to 100 people at an impressive speed of 1 meter per second. At the bottom of the artwork, we can observe intricate hydraulics that powered these remarkable elevators. While American company Otis constructed lifts for two legs of this architectural masterpiece, it was Roux-Combaluzier who designed and built those showcased in this illustration. This historical snapshot not only highlights their contribution but also emphasizes France's prowess in mechanical engineering during this period. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece from over a century ago, we are reminded not only of Paris' rich history but also how technology has evolved since then. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and reminds us why millions continue to flock to visit this timeless symbol - The Eiffel Tower.
