Edmund Halley, English astronomer (1656-1742)
Engraving of Edmund Halley (1656-1742), an English astromoner. Halley showed that comets move around the sun in accordance with Newtons theory of gravitation. He noticed that the orbits of the comets of 1531, 1607 & 1682 were similar & conculded that it was a single comet in a closed but very elongated orbit about the sun, visible only when it was close to the earth. He calculated that it would reappear in 1758, sixteen years after his own death, which it did & was given his name. Halley was made astronomer royal in 1720. The engraving is from Great Astronomers by Sir Robert S. Ball, FRS; published by Ibister & Co. London (1895)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Edmund Halley, an influential English astronomer whose discoveries revolutionized our understanding of comets. Born in 1656 and passing away in 1742, Halley's contributions to science continue to inspire astronomers today. In this engraving, we see a dignified portrayal of Halley, capturing his intellectual prowess and dedication to unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos. His most significant achievement was demonstrating that comets orbit the sun following Sir Isaac Newton's theory of gravitation. Through meticulous observation, he noticed striking similarities between three comets that appeared in 1531, 1607, and 1682. From this data, he deduced that they were actually sightings of a single comet with an elongated orbit around the sun. Remarkably, Halley predicted that this celestial visitor would reappear in 1758 - sixteen years after his own demise - earning it the name "Halley's Comet. " This extraordinary foresight solidified his place among history's greatest astronomers. Appointed as Astronomer Royal in 1720, Halley left an indelible mark on scientific exploration during his lifetime. The engraving itself is sourced from "Great Astronomers" by Sir Robert S. Ball and published by Ibister & Co. , London in 1895. It serves as a testament to both Halley's enduring legacy and Science Photo Library's commitment to preserving scientific achievements through captivating imagery.
