The colours in the atmosphere result from differential scattering of sunlight by the layers of the atmosphere. In the lower atmosphere, the troposphere, dense air refracts red light from the Sun. The higher, thinner air of the upper atmosphere refracts predominantly blue light. Photographs like this are used to study layering in the atmosphere: as many as 4 laminae have been identified in the troposphere and up to 12 laminae in the blue upper atmosphere
