Early fire brigade street alarm

Early fire brigade alarm system. Historical artwork of a fireman testing a 19th-century combined telephonic and telegraphic street fire alarm system. The alarm is designed to be set off manually (by breaking a glass panel), transmitting a Morse code signal to a fire brigade station telling them the location of the fire. There is also a speaker and telephone system to allow verbal communication with the fire brigade. This is a French system, though similar systems were used in other countries as well. Artwork from A Travers l Electricite (G. Dary, Paris, 1900)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork captures a pivotal moment in the development of fire brigade alarm systems. Depicting a 19th-century French fireman, the illustration showcases an early telephonic and telegraphic street fire alarm system. With its intricate design, this innovative system aimed to swiftly alert the fire brigade about the location of fires. Intriguingly, this manual alarm required breaking a glass panel to set it off, triggering a Morse code signal that would be transmitted to the nearest fire brigade station. The inclusion of a speaker and telephone system allowed for verbal communication with firefighters on duty, enabling efficient coordination during emergencies. The significance of this technological advancement cannot be overstated. As cities grew larger and more densely populated during the 19th century, effective communication became crucial in combating urban fires. This French invention paved the way for similar systems across Europe and beyond. Through this remarkable artwork from "A Travers l'Electricite" we are transported back in time to witness both human ingenuity and progress in technology. It serves as a testament to our relentless pursuit of safety and protection against devastating fires throughout history.
