Drop on drop water collision C016 / 6367

Splash created by a rebounding water drop colliding with a second falling water drop. Photographed with high speed flash. Surface tension is responsible for the shape of liquid droplets. Although easily deformed, droplets of water tend to be pulled into a spherical shape by the cohesive forces of the surface layer. In the absence of other forces, including gravity, drops of virtually all liquids would be perfectly spherical. The spherical shape minimizes the necessary wall tension" of the surface layer according to Laplaces law."

Collision Deformation Drip Droplets Falling Gravity High Speed Flash Liquid Splash Surface Tension Water Drop Water Droplets Waves Laplace

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Drop on drop water collision" captures a mesmerizing moment of nature's dance. With the use of high-speed flash, the image freezes in time the breathtaking splash created by a rebounding water drop colliding with a second falling water drop. The surface tension of the liquid droplets is responsible for their unique shape, as they are pulled into perfect spheres by cohesive forces within the surface layer. In this remarkable absence of gravity and other external forces, we witness how drops of various liquids would naturally assume a spherical form. This phenomenon is beautifully explained by Laplace's law, which states that the spherical shape minimizes wall tension within the surface layer. The vibrant green backdrop adds an element of freshness to this visually stunning composition. Each droplet seems to possess its own personality as it defies deformation and creates ripples and waves upon impact. Through this photograph, artist David Parker invites us to appreciate not only the beauty found in these tiny water droplets but also to marvel at the scientific principles that govern their behavior. It serves as a reminder that even in seemingly ordinary moments, there exists an extraordinary world waiting to be explored and understood.
