The outer cortex (red) is made of cork cambium tissue, beneath which is a ring of phloem and sieve tube bundles (pale blue). Under this is a ring of cambium (red) and then woody fibres (palegreen). The solid pith (bottom, yellow and blue) is composed of large parenchyma cells. Magnification: x44 when printed 10 centimetres wide
